Do no harm. This is the ethical principle that guides medical professionals and is also my underpinning principle.
I advocate positive reinforcement training techniques, with an understanding of a dog’s natural behaviour to educate owners, with the aim of achieving as far as possible, well-behaved and well- socialised dogs and good owners.
I oppose the use of harsh equipment and techniques.
I will conduct myself professionally, honestly and with compassion to perform these services within the guidelines of this code.
I will continue personal development with new advances in the field of canine behaviour to provide the most effective ways of behaviour alterative training to best serve my clients.
I only advocate and use training methods that:
Reinforce and elicit desired behaviours
Inhibit or discourage unwanted or potentially dangerous behaviours using force free methodology
When preparing training and behavioural modification programs, I will endeavour to consider the psychological and physical wellbeing of my client and their dog(s). I shall promote responsible caring ownership into their training.
I may in general guarantee satisfaction with my services but effective outcomes and results are dependent on the canine development programme having the full commitment and compliance by the client so we can work together to achieve desired outcomes.
I will determine and recognise my own professional abilities and limits, be honest and open with clients and where necessary refer clients to another practitioner.
I will be aware that the client has called me as a professional and at all times conduct my behaviour with sympathy and tact.
I will respect the views and independence of other behaviour practitioners and dog trainers, and shall not decry their methods, conduct or opinions unless these are considered as abuse.
I will maintain professional relationships with my clients and not exploit for any personal, professional or financial gain, nor impose my own values on clients.
I will at all times conduct my work taking into account the health and safety of myself, my client and the welfare of their dog. I will consider the health and safety to the general public and have a valid public liability and professional indemnity insurance policy.
This code of conduct is a living document and will be updated and developed in accordance to adaptive dog training methods.
